Several days ago, a prominent anti-corruption lawyer from Guatemala, Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa, was murdered while coaching a soccer team. According to a report by Human Rights Watch, Foppa led several high-profile investigations into criminal networks in Guatemala, as well as bribery and tax evasion. It has been reported that while two men were arrested at the scene of the crime, they were released due to a lack of evidence. According to a report in the Miami Herald, there is some thought that this murder could cause political instability in the country. It is very unlikely that we will ever truly find out the real reason as to the motives for this murder, although it seems likely that it could be one of the many criminal factions wanting to get revenge on Foppa.
